Hosting
If you are creating a school or classroom page then most likely
the district will provide hosting space for your web site. In
Utah it has been common to provide ftp access to the schools web
site to only one person at the school the"Webmaster".
If teachers wanted to have their own site they would have to
create it then hand over the files to the school web master to
upload to the server. At best this is a cumbersome process for
both parties and leads to teachers not being motivated to create
and update their own site. a number of progressive districts have
started giving teachers their own space on the web server that
they could upload to without anyone's help. This truly motivates
teachers because they can update their site whenever from where
ever they want.
As a teacher you will have to contact the school or district
person with responsibility for the web servers to see about getting
hosting space.
If these options are not plausible then you may want to look
into commercial hosting. This will entail paying a monthly fee
as well as registering a domain name.(www.myalgebrasite.com) There
are thousands of companies that will host your site for a fee.
Look over the list of links on the left for a few suggestions.
A link to a host does not imply a recommendation.
In the past there were a number of so called "free"
hosting services. Most disappeared when the tech bubble burst
and the ones that stuck around get you to pay by forcing advertising
onto your pages.
Spotlight
Recently I became aware of a hosting company that is offering
a good deal: 3 years of hosting for FREE. They
also would register domains for $5.99 a month. This seemed to
good to be true until I checked it out and signed up. Amazingly
enough it is too good to be true and still is true. The address
is www.1and1.com
and so far they are delivering what they promised. It is a promotion
to kick start their business and a very generous one so far.
