The Ol' Switcheroo

Build a Switch

Materials needed:
1-Small block of wood about 3-4 inches long
2-Thumbtacks (not painted or you may not be able to complete your circuit unless you scrape all of the paint off)
1-Large paper clip
3-Pieces of wire about 8 inches long
1-Low voltage light socket
1-Low voltage light bulb (a flashlight bulb)

1. Strip one inch of insulation off both ends of each wire piece.

2. Connect the end of two different wires to each of the light socket.

3. Wrap one end of one of the wires connected to the light socket around the base of a thumbtack and push it into the board.

4. Connect the other end of the wire connected to the light to one of the battery terminals.

5. Wrap one end of the wire not connected to anything around the other thumbtack, and then with the wire on, put it through one end of the thumbtack and push it firmly into the block of wood. Be sure to have the thumbtack about the length of the paperclip away from the other paper clip in the board.

6. Connect the wire from the pivot of the thumbtack to the other battery terminal.

7. Close the circuit. The light should come on. If not, check to make sure that all of your wire connections are good and that enough wire is touching everything. It should look something like this:
