Incandescent Bulbs
The information below applies to incandescent light bulbs only. DO NOT try this with a neon or fluorescent light.

Have you ever looked inside a light bulb? With the supervision of a grown up, look at the bulb when it is not screwed in a socket, that way you can turn it all around and see everything.
To get a really good look you will need:
qqqOne clear, not frosted, light bulb
qqqOne magnifying glass
qqqGood lighting
After you have had a good look at the insides of the bulb, draw a diagram. Can you predict the pathway the electricity flows in order to make a complete circuit? Can you see the critical contact points of the bulb?
Now look at the insides of a bulb that is burned out. What is different between the burned out bulb and the bulb that still lights?
After you draw your diagram of the bulb, visit the web site below to see a diagram with all the parts labeled.
