WebQuest Tasks and Processes

Task #1 – Getting to know Kate DiCamillo

For this first task, you will need to spend some time in your group exploring the websites regarding Kate DiCamillo and the interviews she has participated in.  Take note of the references to her own life that she makes in the websites specifically about her but also in the interviews.  Use your knowledge of Ms. DiCamillo’s books Because of Winn-Dixie and The Tale of Despereaux (from reading the books and our class discussions) and your new knowledge of Ms. DiCamillo’s life to create a PowerPoint presentation which will identify instances where you believe Ms. DiCamillo’s life has been imbedded in her literary works.
As part of this task, visit the Winn-Dixie stores website and, using your new-found knowledge about Ms. DiCamillo, decide whether or not she may have ever visited a Winn-Dixie store during the course of her life.  Include your conclusion in your PowerPoint presentation and justify your reasoning.
Your PowerPoint presentation should be no longer than twenty-five slides long but no shorter than fifteen.

Task #2 – Kate DiCamillo’s editing process

For this second task, visit the scholastic website listed which discusses Ms. DiCamillo’s editing process.  Watch the slide show and study the drafts available in step three of the lesson plan on this page.  Within your group discuss what you believe to be the most important parts of her editing process to be.  Make a list of these most-important parts and reasons you believe them to be important.  Be prepared to defend and justify your findings in a whole class discussion regarding Ms. DiCamillo’s editing process.
Upon completion of this task, each member of your group needs to indicate one goal they have arrived upon through exploring Ms. DiCamillo’s editing practices to improve their own editing practices.  Each member will need to write one to three paragraphs indicating what their own personal goal is, why it is important to the editing process in general and their own editing practices specifically, what they are going to do to achieve that goal, and what part of the information learned about Ms. DiCamillo influenced them to set this particular goal.
