Course Description and Objectives: This course is designed for students who have an interest in developing skills, attitudes and knowledge necessary to start and operate a successful business. Indicators are a step-by-step process to take students from broad concepts to creating a business of their own (i.e., lawn care, hair stylist, cake baking, Subway sandwich franchise or import / export business). Students will learn basic economic principles, assess common traits and skills found in entrepreneurs, explore business opportunities and compare the risks and rewards of owning a business. Students will then begin the process of creating their own business by generating ideas and measuring the feasibility of each. They will develop business plans. Students taking marketing / business classes will have the opportunity to participate in DECA (An Association of Marketing Students) and / or FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America.
 
Grading: Students will be evaluated on the following criteria:
Assignments (35% of grade)
Students will receive regular homework and in-class assignments. All assignments will have a specific due date. Assignments will be graded on completeness and accuracy, on following directions, and on legibility and neatness. It is expected that each student will do his /her own work. No credit will be given for work that is not the student's own work.

Performance Activities (20% of grade)
Students will be required to complete performance activities each quarter to meet the guidelines of the Utah State Office of Education. The performance competencies will be announced each quarter. Students must reach mastery level (80%) to pass.

Participation (10% of grade)
Participation grades will be based as follows:

• Ten points will be given for being on time to class and on task the entire period.
• Ten points will be given if the student makes up work following an excused absence.
• Five points will be deducted if the student has an unexcused tardy.
• Five points will be given if the students make up work following an unofficial absence.
• No points will be given for truancy.
• Additionally, there will be a loss of participation points for off-task or inappropriate behavior.

Tests and Quizzes (35%)
Tests will be graded on completeness, accuracy, legibility and following directions.
NOTE:   Several opportunities will be made available for limited extra credit points.   

Grading Scale

Makeup Work: Students will have five school days to make up work missed (assignments or quizzes / tests) for an excused or unofficial absence. Make-up work for truancies or unexcused absences will not be allowed, for either assignments or quizzes/tests. The instructor will be available for make-up work and tests, individual help, or other student needs on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 7:00 to 7:50 a.m., and after school each day until 3 p.m. During the other weekday mornings, all teachers will be involved in Comprehensive School Improvement activities.

Attendance Policy: To receive credit in this class this attendance policy must be followed:
Each absence will count as five (5) points; each “way late” absence (more than 10 minutes late) will count as four (4) points; each truancy will count as ten (10) points. Each tardy will count as three (3) points. When a student reaches a total of twenty-four (24)  points in a given class (per quarter), the student receives no credit for that class unless the absences / tardies are made up in attendance school or are successfully appealed.

Citizenship grades are based on preparation and participation points, with loss of citizenship grades occurring because of unexcused absences and tardies and not obeying the rules in the following paragraph. Those items with an asterisk will merit one warning daily. There will be no warning for disobeying the other rules.
Grades will be based on the following:
         H – student has three or fewer tardies and / or absences
         S – student makes up all tardies and / or absences
         N – student makes up some absences and / or tardies
         U – student does not make up absences and / or tardies
      Additionally, citizenship grades will be lowered in the case of inappropriate classroom behavior.

Class rules are these:

• *Students will use equipment appropriately and according to teacher’s directions.
• * Students will follow all written and verbal directions.
• * No food, gum, or drinks in the computer labs.
• * No cell phones or other electronic devices in class, including iPods and CD players (this is a Jordan School District policy). If students break this rule, the following will apply:
• First infraction: warning.*
• Second infraction: the teacher will take the device and return it to the student at the end of the class period.
• Third infraction: the teacher will take the device and turn it in to the vice principal. The student will then be responsible to the administration to retrieve the device.
• * Students will respect others in the class. Rudeness in any form is unacceptable.
• Sharing of computer or other assignments between students will absolutely not be tolerated. If such sharing does occur, all students involved will receive zero points on the assignment or test involved, and they will also receive a reduction in their citizenship grades.
• Computer games are not allowed.
• * Downloading of unapproved materials from the Internet will not be allowed. If such downloading occurs, the following will apply:
• First infraction: warning.
• Second infraction: student will temporarily lose computer privileges and will be required to complete alternate work.
• Third infraction: administrative action may be taken.
• The use of the Internet will only occur during certain portions of this class.  During the remainder of the semester, Internet use will not be allowed.

Infractions of the rules will result in one or more of the following, depending upon frequency and severity of the problem: loss of daily participation points, calls home, or referral to administration. Those students who abide by the rules will receive one or more of the following: positive notes to student or parent, and the right to drop a low score on an assignment or quiz.

Hall Passes:  To cut down on unnecessary absences from class time, students will be allowed to use a hall pass no more than twice each quarter for legitimate purposes (five-minute limit). Additionally, no hall passes will be issued the first 20 minutes of each class.

Required Materials: Students will be expected to bring their own pen or pencil, paper and assigned textbook or other required materials to class every day.

Power School: Parents and students can access grades and attendance from the Internet at any time. I will keep my grades up-to-date so you will always know where your student stands in this class. Photos:  I will be posting photos of students working in class on my website. In that situation, students would not be identified. Very soon, I will be sending a permission slip home for the approval of a parent or guardian.
