A Dialogue on Faculty: Teaching Online in 21st Century Institutions

Tuesday, June 23, 2009
2:10 pm - 3:00 pm

Description

This presentation will compare and contrast how two very different institutions - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and Excelsior College (EC) – approach faculty roles, support, expectations, accountability and quality assurance in the online and distance education environments. Both presenters will discuss policy and systems to support faculty in online teaching and learning. The presenters will contrast how RPI (with a traditional faculty model) and EC (with a non-traditional model relying heavily on adjunct faculty) approach course support, and the oversight of course quality. The two institutions will also contrast how the scale of their operations—RPI currently offers 20 online courses while EC offers hundreds—impacts their approaches.
