Accessible Courses: Going Beyond Technology to Meet the Needs of Students with Disabilities

Tuesday, June 23, 2009
1:10 pm - 2:00 pm

Description

Do you sleep soundly at night, thinking that the needs of students with disabilities are covered because your institution uses a Section 508 compliant course management system? Did you know that it might not be enough? Students with disabilities face unique challenges in online courses, many of which go beyond the need for an accessible course platform. And the guiding legal principles, Section 504 and the ADA (NOT Section 508), do not even begin to address the accessibility issues created by online and distance learning. The presenter will discuss challenges posed to students with disabilities in online courses as well as how to interpret the legal principles regarding your institution’s mandate to provide access. Participants will leave the session with an understanding of the barriers to accessibility as well as tips and strategies to overcome them.
