Call for Submissions: The NUTN 2009 Planning Committee invites you to nominate award winners in the following categories:

Important Dates: Submission deadline for each award category: March 6, 2009.
Award Recipient will be notified by April 10, 2009.

Individual recipients of awards will receive one complimentary registration per award and are expected to attend NUTN 2009 in Saratoga Springs, NY, June 21-13, 2009. A brief video presentation (2-3 minutes) produced in coordination with NUTN will highlight the award recipients who will have the opportunity to make brief acceptance remarks at the awards luncheon ceremony.

NUTN 2009 RESEARCH PAPER AWARD
Submission Deadline: March 6, 2009

The National University Telecommunications Network (NUTN) is seeking nominations for the annual research paper award. The Theme of the 2009 Annual Distance Learning Event is "Quality in Motion." Research papers nominated for this award should represent an actual research study including the following components:

  1. A clearly articulated and testable hypothesis or problem statement
  2. An introduction with a strong theoretical base and review of relevant literature
  3. Clearly explained samples and sampling methods
  4. Follow sound research protocol, whether in keeping with quantitative methods (e.g.,
    experimental or quasi-experimental design) or qualitative methods (e.g., focus groups or text analysis)
  5. Present findings and recommendations in keeping with the research methodology

The results and/or recommendations of the study must demonstrate a contribution to our understanding of the principles, practices, and approaches that lead to (1) increasing and maintaining quality and/or (2) improved student learning. The findings of the research should be applicable to the distance learner. A case study of a single entity will not be accepted as an acceptable research method.

Papers nominated should be submitted electronically by March 6, 2009. The Award recipient will be notified by April 10, 2009.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A Full Research Paper about the finished project (no more than 30 pages/double-spaced), accompanied by an abstract (50-75 words), should be submitted.

NUTN 2009 SHIRLEY DAVIS AWARD
FOR EXCELLENCE IN SYNCHRONOUS DISTANCE LEARNING
Submission Deadline: March 6, 2009

The National University Telecommunications Network (NUTN) is seeking nominations for the NUTN 2009 Shirley Davis Award for Excellence in Synchronous Distance Learning. NUTN invites nominations or applications for consideration by the NUTN Awards Committee for award(s) to be presented at the annual event in Saratoga Springs, NY, June 21-23, 2009. The recipient of the Award will receive a complimentary registration to attend the event.

The NUTN 2009 Shirley Davis Award for Excellence in Synchronous Distance Learning competition recognizes the work of individuals, organizations and institutions in providing synchronous distance learning (via web- or video-conferencing) of a superior nature. The two essential elements of a successful application/nomination for consideration in this award process are:

  • The ability of the applicant to clearly state the objectives of the synchronous distance learning event(s), addressing a demonstrated student learning or professional development need
  • Documentation of an evaluation process that assures successful accomplishment of the objectives

A single synchronous event or a series may be nominated. Synchronous distance learning submissions will be judged by the following criteria:

  • Objectives. Clear statement of objectives for the conference or series of conferences
  • Effectiveness. Evaluation and documentation of effectiveness
  • Approach. Appropriateness and level of innovation of the content, methodology, use of technology, and approach to interactivity in the event or series
  • Quality of Delivery. Technical and production quality and approach to interactivity in the event or series
  • Other Outcomes. Administrative issues such as numbers served (sites and participants), client satisfaction, fiscal viability, and the possibility of replicable and transferable techniques and methods.

How to submit your application/nomination:

  1. Prepare an application narrative. The narrative should include five sections with headings corresponding to each of the criteria listed above. The narrative should be limited to no more than 5 pages, typewritten.
  2. As an attachment to the narrative, include any demonstration of success: evaluation forms or summary, feedback from participants, other demonstrations of value.
  3. As an additional attachment to the narrative, please include videotapes or links to archived web conferences or video conferences. Applications can't be accepted without complete versions of the conference or series available for viewing.
  4. You may include one additional attachment that includes any other information you'd like the awards committee to consider.
  5. Prepare a cover sheet for your submission that includes the following:
    • The title of the synchronous distance learning event or series. If you are submitting a series, please include the series title and individual event titles.
    • An abstract, 25-50 words, describing the synchronous distance learning event or series.
    • Complete contact information—Name, Title, Organization, Address, Phone, Fax and email Address—for the primary award submission contact.

Nominated projects should submit all materials electronically or by mail to be received by the March 6, 2009 deadline.

NUTN DISTANCE EDUCATION INNOVATION AWARD 2009
Submission Deadline: March 6, 2009

The National University Telecommunications Network (NUTN) is seeking nominations for the NUTN Distance Education Innovation Award 2009. The NUTN Distance Education Innovation Award is presented to an individual or group of individuals representing an institution that has developed an innovative program or practice that contributes to the field of distance education. The award for innovation may be in relation to a new program, an ongoing program, student or support services, pedagogy, faculty development and support or technology.

Judging of materials will be based on the following criteria:

  • How effectively the innovation responds to a stated need
  • How the innovation advances the practice of distance learning or education
  • How the innovation has a broader application and can be duplicated by other providers
  • How the innovation is cost-effective
  • How the innovation can demonstrate a high level of student and faculty satisfaction
  • How the innovation utilizes a new technology or an older technology in a new way
  • How the innovation incorporates a new pedagogy

Each submission should be organized to correspond to the sections described in the previous paragraph. Submissions should be limited to no more than 5 pages, typewritten, and additional materials are limited to three attachments including CDs, tapes, etc. Full contact information for the individual submitting the application must be provided.

NUTN AWARD FOR INSTITUTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT
Submission Deadline: March 6, 2009

The NUTN Institution Achievement award recognizes an institutional member of the National University Telecommunications Network (NUTN) for effective use of technology in teaching and learning and/or organizational administration (or administrative operations) that is exemplary, demonstrates leadership and commitment, and advances the field as an institutional model.

Award criteria:

  1. Organizational Commitment – The institution is organized for success in the broad uses of technology in teaching and learning and/or organizational operations both on and off the campus, involving administrative leadership, faculty and support staff in key positions in a way that is consistent with the institution’s mission and is incorporated into an institution’s planning, and goal-setting processes.
  2. Quality of Offerings - The institution demonstrates how technology has been applied to improve learning, access, faculty, student satisfaction and/or organizational operations. Scale and Scope of offerings - The institution offers a variety of programs blended with technology in whole or in part in diverse disciplines which are representative of the institution’s total offerings. Programs are available on a regional or national basis consistent with the institution’s scope and mission.
  3. Effectiveness – The institution’s technology-assisted offerings have led to faculty teaching large numbers of high-quality on-line, blended, technology-assisted or hybrid courses within a significant segment of the institution with a high degree of student satisfaction and academic measures of success.
  4. Advancing the field - The institution’s efforts with programs and/or processes and achievements have been exemplary, have been emulated, and have substantively contributed to the overall advancement of teaching and learning through its effective use of technology.

Nominations may be submitted by the Board and NUTN membership, or by self-nomination, and must provide evidence responsive to the award criteria. Such documentation should include institutional mission; goals or strategic objectives as relates to technology, teaching and learning; and measures of quality and success.

NUTN STUDENT RECOGNITION AWARD
Submission Deadline: March 6, 2009

The NUTN Student Recognition Award recognizes a student whose use of distance learning has been both exemplary and impactful in providing opportunities for personal or professional advancement.

Award Criteria:

  1. Opportunity – The student seized the opportunity afforded by distance learning, to further academic, personal and/or professional goals,
  2. Academic Achievement – The student has had a high degree of success as measured by academic achievement in distance learning courses and degree completion or advancement.
  3. Professional or Personal Advancement – The student been able to further his or her own goals professionally and/or personally through distance learning in significant ways.

Students for the NUTN Student Recognition award will be nominated by local or host institutions to the annual NUTN event (conference). The nominating party should submit a brief synopsis of the student’s distance learning experiences, and address the three criteria listed above. Selected students will be invited to attend the NUTN annual event to receive their recognition award.
